To the Honorable Paula M. Carey, Chief Justice of the Trial Court
I was just on the phone with somebody in the Clerk’s office at the Leominster District Court and they told me they have not scheduled new small claims cases since April 2020. They said they think it’s all District Courts in MA that have not been scheduling new civil cases.
Wait, what?
Courts are vital in a Democracy.
I assume you know that courts are a co-equal branch of Government along with the Legislature and the Governor. Can you imagine if they closed doors to anything new happening after April 2020?
I will also assume that you are aware that we live in the 21st century. There is a thing called Zoom and masks do exist.
We can’t just close the courts…since April 2020. It’s an essential thing like hospitals, police, fire, post office, etc.
I did not know that our institutions are apparently so fragile in America (or at least in MA) that at the slightest stress to the system we shit in our pants and close them down.
